The Busby and Clarkston Horticultural Society is a gardening club for all who enjoy growing and learning about plants through the activities of its members.

We organise visits to places of horticultural interest, an exciting range of Winter Talks by knowledgeable speakers, pot plant competitions, social events and, of course, the Annual Flower Show, held in Clarkston Halls on the first Saturday of September each year. Our Talks are free and open to non-members, we will be happy to see new faces.

Some Reliable & Exciting Plants for a Woodland Garden by Jim Jermyn
21 September 2023
Jim is a recently retired Property Manager/Head Gardener at Branklyn Gardens in Perth and has been to Clarkston on a few previous occasions.
Tonight’s talk will focus on shade & dappled shade loving plants which can enhance any space under trees & shrubs and are suitable for the Scottish garden.
Jim always has an exceptional slide show.

Practical Photography for Plants by Brian Mcdonough

Brian is a professional photographer, sole proprietor of My Right Eye. He is also the former Chairman of the Glasgow Branch of the BCSS, who until recently met at the Glasgow Botanics.
Brian with illustrate the tricks of the trade in successfully capturing top class images of plants.
He will be demonstrating how to get the best out of our cameras & smart phones.

Growing for Showing – Flowers, Vegetables & Pot Plants by Calum Clunie

Calum is a presenter and amateur grower on Beechgrove, best known for his interest in showing Dahlias, vegetables and even daffodils.
He will demonstrate his tips and techniques for growing excellent quality produce covering the broad spectrum of cut flowers, vegetables & pot plants.
We maybe get a bit of gossip about behind the scenes at the Beechgrove Garden. Not to be missed.

Pruning Trees & Shrubs by Peter MacDonald – after our short A.G.M.
18 January 2024
Peter is a retired lecturer from the horticultural college at Auchincruive near Ayr.
He will guide us through the sometimes painful process of wielding those secateurs, loppers and hedge clippers when tackling pruning jobs in the garden.
Lots of useful tips.
Talk will commence at 8.00pm after our short A.G.M.

A Thing of Beauty is a Joy Forever – Japanese Gardens by Nancy Stevens
15 February 2024
Nancy is from Baldernock Gardening Club and will demonstrate how the Japanese view their gardens, the history behind some of them and amazing events that take place in them today.
She will also look at some techniques employed to keep them looking like the works of art they undoubtedly are.

How to get the Best from your Greenhouse by Jim Williams FNVS
21 March 2024
Jim is a regular visitor to Clarkston (who remembers the demonstration with a magnificent flying Red Kite in the Hall?).
He has a new talk covering all aspects of greenhouse gardening. Heating, lighting, ventilation and good husbandry are paramount as well as covering what grows best in this protected environment.

Begonias for Form & Flower by Stan da Prato
18 April 2024
Stan is another favourite speaker at Clarkston and returns from his adventures behind the compost heap with a talk on growing one of our best loved plants, Begonias.
Ranging from species for specialist growers to annuals & non-stops for summers colour and including foliage varieties for impact.
Stan will cover the broad range of care and cultivation for these well-loved plants.

Plant Swap Night – a freestyle evening with various activities including swapping our surplus plants
16 May 2024
A free & easy night with fun, plant swaps, slide show, quizzes and anything else we can come up with.
Sometimes a surprise, topical guest speaker.
Proceeds of plant swap go to charity.
