Now in its fourth year, The Mackintosh Festival takes place from 1-31 October 2015 and celebrates the life of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Visitors are invited to discover Mackintosh’s legacy in the buildings he designed. During the month, there will be over 30 exhibitions, talks, tours, workshops and events, many of which are free. This year’s highlights are:
• The Nature of Art Nouveau, a travelling exhibition by the Réseau Art Nouveau Network, will have its UK Premiere at The Lighthouse from 17th October 2015. This free exhibition invites you to explore nature’s temple, a world incorporating symbols, scientific discoveries and influences from faraway lands. Conceived by the Catalan art historian, Teresa-M Sala, the exhibition is based on both encyclopaedic information and individual experimentation. Using photographs and documents, together with dynamic scenography created by Antoni Garau, it offers a concise view of Art Nouveau and aims to bring to life the ‘perfumes, sounds and hues’ of the natural world.
• There is a strong focus on women and social history in this year’s programme. The Willow Tea Rooms present: Tea, Talk & Tour on Kate Cranston, her relationship with Mackintosh, and her part in the temperance and suffragette movements; Glasgow Women’s Library will run their ‘Glasgow Girls of Garnethill’ heritage walk which tells the story of the women who pioneered European art movements, designed banners for suffragette processions and made the Garnethill area one of the most exciting multicultural hotspots in the city; Revisiting Hous’hill at Glasgow Museums Resource Centre invites visitors to explore Hous’hill - the now derelict mansion which belonged to Kate Cranston; House for an Art Lover are hosting masterclasses in stenciling; decoupage and flower arranging - all inspired by Mackintosh’s designs. Dr Robyne Calvert from The Glasgow School of Art will discuss the narrative and symbolic aspects of Mackintosh’s collaborations with his wife, the accomplished artist and designer, Margaret Macdonald at The Glad Café.
• A free talk by Peter Trowles, the GSA’s Mackintosh Curator, and Brian Park from Page/Park – the architects who are restoring The Mack - will focus on the challenges and opportunities of working with the School’s collections following the fire and restoring The Mackintosh Building. Brian will do another talk on bringing Glasgow’s favourite building back to life at The Glad Academy at The Glad Café in Shawlands.
• Exhibitions include: Up Close with Mackintosh Sketches - featuring two rare Mackintosh’s sketches from his Italian study tour at Mackintosh Queen’s Cross and The Hill House will be showing an exhibition of architect’s drawings of the House by Mackintosh.
• Visitors can enjoy free tours of The Glasgow Art Club, Glasgow Mackintosh’s newest member which is home to re-instated frieze by Mackintosh in the main gallery; The Mackintosh House at The Hunterian will offer free tours when you present a festival guide; Home from Home will comprise of a tour of House for an Art Lover; Mackintosh’s Glasgow residence and his finest domestic creation – The Hill House.
• A series of music concerts will take place in the sublime surroundings of Mackintosh Queen’s Cross covering a variety of genres including: rock and roll; classical; jazz and film soundtracks.
• Young Mackintosh fans can learn to juggle at a workshop and enjoy a puppet circus show at Mackintosh Queen’s Cross. Passport to Light invites young people to take inspiration from Mackintosh’s love of light and nature at workshops at: Scotland Street School Museum; St Mungo Museum of Religious Art and People’s Palace. Kelvingrove’s Glasgow Style Family Weekend will feature free family workshops.
Commenting on the programme, Ian Elder, Chair of Glasgow Mackintosh, said:
“Following on from the success of last year’s month-long festival, we present a varied programme of over 30 events for our fourth Mackintosh Festival. With over a million visitors enjoying Mackintosh last year and over 100,000 people visiting our venues during Mackintosh Month, we are looking forward to welcoming to celebrating his life and genius at our venues.”
