Junk Kouture, the fashion competition with a trashy twist, has arrived in Scotland for the second time. Glasgow school pupils are being encouraged to recycle their rubbish into wearable, couture style designs for the chance to be crowned the winner of Junk Kouture Scotland 2016.
This year’s competition will see celebrity judge Louis Walsh take a seat on the Junk Kouture panel to preside over the brand new ‘Best Performance’ category at the Grand Final at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall. Louis was joined by last year’s Irish winners, Rebecca Breslin, Aideen Rafferty, Siobhan Buggy and Sarah Cox, to officially launch this year’s competition.
The competition is open to all secondary school aged children across Scotland and Junk Kouture has already seen high levels of interest from schools throughout the country. Pupils are being challenged to get creative with junk that would otherwise be thrown out and fashion couture style designs. The most innovative and fashion forward designs will walk it out in front of the Junk Kouture judging panel on Friday 05 February at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall.
Sallina Sheikh, Flori Hanley and Ola Skowyra from Hillhead High School in Glasgow were crowned the first ever Scottish junk queens earlier this year after fierce competition on the catwalk from young designers across Scotland which saw everything from McDonald’s wrappers, IRN-BRU cans and melted crayons take to the stage.
£1,000 cash and red carpet tickets for a London Film Premiere are just two of the fantastic prizes to be won in this year’s competition and it’s set to be a tough battle so wannabe designers should get their glue guns at the ready.
Louis Walsh said: “I can’t wait to see what Glasgow’s budding designers bring to the stage and am very much looking forward to seeing them walk it off in style at the Grand Final in February.”
Founder Elizabeth Curran is excited to bring Junk Kouture back to Scotland: “We were totally blown away by the level of creativity in last year’s designs and can’t wait to see what this year brings. We really want to encourage students to think twice about what they’re throwing in the bin and it’s inspiring to see how Scottish students translate their rubbish into stylish Junk Kouture designs.”
Already a major success in Ireland and Northern Ireland, Junk Kouture inspires young, wannabe fashion designers to come up with truly spectacular creations, while at the same time reinforcing the importance of recycling and re-using waste.
Information packs have been sent to schools with details of how to get involved. For more information visit www.junkkouture.co.uk, follow on Twitter @JunkKouture or like Junk Kouture on Facebook.
