This news comes as the first phase of a £35million redevelopment at the venue - a unique collaboration between Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Life, the University of Glasgow and the National Library of Scotland - nears completion.
Bringing around one third of the building back into use, the Glasgow Club at Kelvin Hall will host a state-of-the-art Super Gym, an eight-court multi-purpose sports hall, three dance studios, and a gymnastics hall, making it one of the biggest sports facilities of its kind.
The gym will be one of the largest indoor health and fitness facilities anywhere in Scotland, spread over more than 1000m2, and around £325,000 has been invested in more than 100 cardiovascular, strength conditioning, and fixed resistance stations.
It will also offer the largest Functional Training space in a Glasgow Club facility, with group classes for up to 20 participants.
Users will benefit from the latest ‘Unity’ screens on cardiovascular equipment which feature additional functions such as virtual training and the ability to surf the internet.
G-Cycle enthusiasts will also experience the first ever Glasgow Club studio with a video screen wall which will play during indoor cycling classes.
To mark the announcement, Councillor Frank McAveety, Leader of Glasgow City Council, paid a visit to the venue.
He said: “This building has always been special to the people of Glasgow, and our investment will secure it for generations to come.
“When it opens, Glasgow Club at Kelvin Hall will have the biggest and best-equipped Super Gym anywhere in the city – a fact which is very fitting of a venue which has been at the heart of the Glasgow’s sporting history over the years.
“It really is exciting to think that in just under two months, people across the city will come to Kelvin Hall to try out this brand new equipment for themselves.
“This reopening will bring sport facilities to a new generation of Glaswegians, encouraging and inspiring them to take part and keep fit. I personally can’t wait to see the building buzzing with locals who come down to visit and use their newest public facility.”
Last week, Glasgow City Council underlined its commitment to the second phase of works when it approved investment plans worth £8.2million at Kelvin Hall, including a new roof and further improvements to other undeveloped areas of the building.
The Council will contribute a total of £6.2million to this work, including a projected £1.2million which was committed but unspent in the first phase of the works. A further £2million from the Scottish Government is to be confirmed as part of the ongoing budget review process.
