Junk Kouture is back in Scotland for its third consecutive year, and schools across Scotland are urged to get trashy with only five weeks left to enter the nationwide fashion design competition.
Glamorous television personality and newspaper columnist, Cat Cubie will once again take to the stage to host the event which sees high school pupils from across Scotland design couture fashion completely out of recycled rubbish.
Cat made a special guest appearance at Stirling High School yesterday (Wednesday 7 December) as pupils put their designs through their paces in their very own junk fashion show. 36 art and design students from S1-S4 took to the catwalk to strut their stuff in preparation for the main Junk Kouture event in February.
The unique fashion show will take place on Thursday 9 February in Glasgow’s SECC, and schools up and down the country still have time to enter the 2017 competition with entries closing at midnight on Friday 13 January 2017. All secondary school pupils in Scotland are eligible to compete, and entries can be made online via the Junk Kouture website.
Cat Cubie is the latest addition to the star studded line up who will be in attendance on the night. X Factor judge Louis Walsh will once again take his place on the judging panel alongside Saturdays star Una Healey, fashion designer Rhys Ellis and former Junk Kouture Ireland winner Katie Brill.
Cat said: “I am thrilled to be involved in the competition again for 2017, and it’s been great to have had a sneak peek at what Stirling High have been working on. They have definitely set the bar high -the creations are out of this world!
“Junk Kouture is such a unique concept and the students who take part are all so talented and passionate about the whole process; I can’t wait to see what fabulous pieces make it to the grand final!”
Amanda Speedie, art teacher at Stirling High School, said: “The pupils have thoroughly enjoyed the whole process of Junk Kouture so far; from collecting the junk and coming up with themes, to working with hair and makeup artists to complete the finished look, it has been a fantastic creative process.
“Everyone has really thrown themselves into the competition and we are so proud of the finished outcomes. We really hope that this encourages the pupils to think about fashion design as a future career, and we would highly recommend other schools in Scotland to take part.”
Paul Cassidy, head teacher at Stirling High School, also added: “We are proud to be supporting the creative development of our young people through our own Junk Kouture fashion show. Not only is it a great way for us promote our work as an Eco School, but also develop the student’s creative and problem solving skills – and the results are fantastic!”
The overall winner of Junk Kouture will receive £1000 for their school, £500 cash, and iPad mini’s for their fellow team mates and teacher.
Already a huge success in Ireland and Northern Ireland, Junk Kouture inspires young, budding fashion designers to come up with truly spectacular creations, while at the same time reinforcing the importance of recycling and re-using waste.
