Local favourite Craig Hill gets Glaswegians counting down the days to the Glasgow Live International Comedy Festival with an appearance at Queen Street Station. Usually seen behind a microphone, the top stand up joined event partner ScotRail and took to the concourse in his trademark kilt as Glasgow gears up for the huge event which sees venues packed out all over the city.
This is the 15th year of the Glasgow Live International Comedy Festival which runs 9 - 26 March and features over 470 shows taking place in 50 venues over 18 days. 2017 is the festival’s biggest ever line up, featuring stand up, sketches, improv, theatre, film and family fun, with shows putting a comedic spin on everything from gin to gussets, football to climate change.
2017’s festival features household names like Jimmy Carr, Stewart Lee, Bridget Christie, Omid Djalili, Reg D Hunter, Sue Perkins and Miles Jupp; the very best in local talent including Fred MacAulay, Des Clarke, Susan Calman, Iain Connell and Robert Florence plus rising stars of Scotland’s world renowned comedy scene like Richard Gadd, Fern Brady, Darren Connell, Ashley Storrie, Scott Gibson and Larry Dean.
Leader of Glasgow City Council, Councillor Frank McAveety, said: “Glaswegians are renowned for their hospitality and good humour so it’s no surprise that we’re home to one of the best comedy festivals in the world, which perfectly encapsulates our city’s personality. Over the years we’ve welcomed some of the biggest – and funniest – comedians to Glasgow and they come back time and again because we’re a city that knows how to put on a show. This year reflects the festival’s biggest ever line-up and that’s evident in the quality of the programme and performers; providing visitors and locals alike with hundreds of shows to choose from in some terrific city venues.”
Stuart Turner, Head of EventScotland, part of VisitScotland’s Events Directorate, said: “We’re delighted to once again be supporting the Glasgow Live International Comedy Festival. Every year they offer a programme full of some of the best comedy talent from home and abroad and this year is no different.
“As one of the most highly-acclaimed comedy festivals in the UK, the Glasgow Live International Comedy Festival shows why Scotland is the perfect stage for events.”
ScotRail’s commercial director, Cathy Craig, said: “We’re thrilled to partner with Glasgow Live International Comedy Festival, which sees top acts come and perform in various venues across the city.
“Our extensive rail network boasts of over 340 stations across the country, and with fast and frequent services to Glasgow, we’ll be helping comedy fans travel to and around the city for the Festival.”
Gregor Kyle, Editor of Glasgow Live said: "Over the past few months we have been able to see just how excited people here in Glasgow are about this year's festival. The response we have had to our stories and interviews has been great and the big acts are going to be a big draw - it could be one of the most successful festivals to date.
"It's also been interesting to meet and talk to the local talent here in the city, the likes of Darren Connell and the Burnistoun boys, Rab Florence and Iain Connell. I didn't realise the wealth of up and coming acts in Glasgow and I am really looking forward to see some of the 'less well know acts', guys like Patrick Mulholland and Derek McLuckie, who were brilliant on the launch night.
"It's a festival you can really 'get into' and on where people will see some of the best comics that Glasgow, Scotland - and the world - has to offer."
Tickets for all festival shows are on sale now. Keep up to date with all the latest news by registering at glasgowcomedyfestival.com and follow on Facebook and Twitter @glasgowcomedy.
