‘Even the Southside Fringe team is blown away by the standard and calibre of events in the programme,’ said co-founder, Corinna Currie. ‘We have a strong slant on the arts with events ranging from The Bungo Bar & Kitchen’s collaboration with Scottish Ballet’s Under the Skin season, presenting an exclusive 30-minute screening of four short films, or DIG at Tramway, featuring the world premiere of Joan Cleville Dance: The North.
The fun begins at Fringe HQ on May 11, with an intimate programme preview to get that unique Southside Fringe atmosphere flowing. At the House for an Art Lover on May 13, local artists show their work at the Southside Salon Exhibition, while Art on the Park, previews some of the fantastic acts you can enjoy during the Fringe. There is also a chance to pick up some art of your own at the Art on Scotland’s art market. Please note: parking is extremely limited at the House for an Art Lover and public transport is strongly recommended. Saturday, May 13, comes to a rollicking close with the fabulous Colonel Mustard and the Dijon Five, at the O2 Academy, and £1 from the ticket price goes to charity partner for the event, People Without Labels. ‘We are delighted to welcome the O2 Academy to the Fringe Family for the first time,’ said Corinna Currie, ‘and we can’t wait to get our dancing shoes on to party with Colonel Mustard and the Dijon Five’.
Saturday, May 20, sees the welcome return of Pastaval, the public competition to find the best Mac’n’Cheese in the Southside. Organised by Foodie Explorers, venues taking part include: The Butterfly and the Pig, Buddy’s Diner, Millbrae Hill Café, The Bungo, and The Waverley Tea Room.
Working with Booked on Pulse 98.4FM, we have a fascinating new literary programme this year, with highlights including Psychedelic Confessions of a Primal Screamer with John Martin reading from his book about the early day of Primal Scream, as part of the Glasgow Psychedelic Festival, at Carlton Studios on May 13. Scottish PEN’s The Fields of War is a multi-media performance with award-winning poets Chrys Salt and Brian Johnstone, at Fringe HQ on May 23. There’s even a show in a campervan, with author Sue Reid Sexton parking up at the Blether café on May 16, for a superb workshop, Writing on the Road.
‘In an exciting development for the Fringe, we have collaborated with Baldy Bane Theatre and St. Albert’s Primary School, to bring an uplifting exploration of refugee experiences and what it really means to call a place home in, Unpathed Waters, Undreamed Shores, supported by and playing at Tramway – a new venue this year – on May 23,’ said Corinna Currie.
Music is one of the mainstays of the Fringe and this year’s highlights include one of the busiest wedding and function bands, Papa Shandy and the Drams, at the Clockwork Beer Company on May 12. On May 19, it is time for bluegrass and flat-picking with The Daddy Naggins, at the Waverley Tearooms, and on May 20, Brooklyn native Marilyn Carino, who has an extraordinary voice, performs songs from her latest album, Leaves, Sadness Science. If you fancy a bit of ‘eccentric, indietronica meets wonky pop’, then head down to The Butterfly and Pig South, to catch Featherwest, or if Americana is more your style Lebowskis South has David Starr playing on May 22. On May 27, its everyone back to Fringe HQ for Eugene Twist, a remarkable singer/songwriter from Scotland, and the Tommy Bentz Band, a power trio who have been described as ‘a blend of Allman Brothers, Van Morrison, and Elvis Costello’.
The Southside Fringe is also working with Inhouse to re-launch the redeveloped Queen’s Park Arena as the Fringe finishes with a flourish on May 27-28. Lots of great guests and surprises lined up so the Fringe goes out in style. And throughout the two weeks you can toast the Fringe with Ride Breweries bespoke Southside Fringe IPA, a thirst-quencher specially developed with the Southside Fringe.
The Southside Fringe HQ in Shawlands Shopping Centre is open from 12-6pm, Wednesday to Sunday during the Fringe.
